When you require a filling or have an old silver filling that is failing, you may need an inlay or onlay. Inlays are done when the old filling or decay is fairly limited and much of the tooth structure can be saved. Onlays are more extensive and cover the cusps of the tooth.

The old fillings are removed under local anesthesia and the tooth is prepared. An impression is made and the ceramic inlay or onlay is fabricated by the dental laboratory.
An inlay/onlay looks like the rest of the tooth , they are more durable and stronger than regular direct composites.
